Baby’s Been…

When I was pregnant and when Roman was first born people constantly said, “Enjoy every moment. It goes so fast.” I appreciated the reminder. It is in my nature to enjoy every moment. I don’t take anything for granted and I count my blessings daily. But back then I didn’t fully understand the “It goes so fast” sentiment. I realize now that the life of a baby goes by quickly, just as life does. But there is an added element of quickness because a baby is like a measuring stick against time. Babies change and grow so quickly. Most things in life — aside from maybe a garden or a puppy — do not grow and change nearly as quickly as a baby does. And so, as the baby moves from one phase to another, it really does seem like life is flying by at a lightning pace. One moment you have a big pregnant belly, then a tiny newborn, and a moment later, a big ‘ole six-month-old bundle of sweetness. My father keeps reminding me that I will blink my eyes and he’ll be sixteen and then I’ll blink again and he’ll be twenty-six.

But, regardless of how quickly we got here — here we are. Roman is well into his six-month and as sweet & smart & sassy as ever. We had his six-month checkup and he weighed in at 19 pounds, 14.5 ounces and measured in at 46 centimeters. He is at the top of the charts for his height (not surprising considering the size of his Papa). Everything else is right on target. He is doing well across the board. He makes new sounds almost daily. He constantly surprises us with the things that come out of his mouth. When he wants me, he says, “Mamamamamamamamamamamama–mom—-mamamama—-mom” over and over again until I come to him. It seems a little bit early for him to be recognizing “Mama” as me, but we are fairly certain that he is onto something because he doesn’t use it for anything else except my attention. He also has a very specific “voice” that he uses to talk to Bella. He doesn’t have any word or sound for her, but just a soft, sweet voice. Similar to the baby-talk that we use to speak to her. It’s really incredible how observant he is and how he is, already, finding ways to communicate. Oh, and he loves to laugh. He laughs so hard sometimes that his whole body shakes. Anything can set him off, silly faces, kisses from Bella, and tickle-time, too. His rolling laughter is, without a doubt, the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard.

Physically, this little guy gets around. He still isn’t crawling or sitting up on his own, but boy does he scoot & roll! You cannot leave him anywhere. He flies across surfaces the moment that you turn away, nothing is safe. He is also like a little detective investigating everything. He turns to scope out every sound and he picks up everything that is within his grasp for a careful investigation. He eats like a champ and enjoys most foods. Fruit is still his favourite — pears & bananas top the list — and he loves scrambled eggs. We introduce him to a few new foods every week. He was eating so much (like six+ 4-ounce jars a day) but then I started nursing him before every meal (even when he wasn’t too interested in milk) and it’s made a difference. I think that for awhile there he was getting too much food/not enough milk, but we seem to be back on track now. He is still sleeping much better than he has in the past, as well. He sleeps through the night 2-3 nights per week. He still has off nights occasionally. Naps are all over the place but he typically naps between two and three times per day and it all depends on what we’re doing and how he’s feeling. The biggest “challenge” for me lately, has been his early wake-up times. He’s up every morning between 4 and 5:30 a.m. and no matter how I’ve tried to push bedtime back, etc., I just can’t seem to get him out of the habit.

Overall, six-months has been an amazing time — full of so much learning & laughter & cuddles. Every day is an adventure and every day I fall more in love with my baby boy. xo

It’s so true. I swear yesterday I was finding out I was pregnant and now Reagan is going to be SIX! Seriously, how does it happen?!

He is the cutest little guy ever. I miss the 6 month age – they’re so fun at that time. It’s like their little personalities start to really show. I love it.
