Bear Mountain & a Full Moon Tantrum

Last week we took a little trip to Bear Mountain State Park. Talk about a gorgeous place! It is absolutely picturesque. While we were there, we drove up to Perkins Memorial Tower. The tower is perched high above the valley on top of Bear Mountain. It is a 40-foot-tall stone lookout tower built in 1931-34. Of the many locations in the lower Hudson Valley that overlook the Hudson River, this is possibly the very best. From the tower and the surrounding grounds, you have a 360° view south to New York City, east to Connecticut, north to Mount Beacon and west to the Shawangunks. It’s pretty spectacular. (Even if the drive up the winding road that leads to it scared the heck out of me!)

Something interesting happened that day. Roman is one of the most well-behaved babies I have ever met… when we are out of the house. At home he is a good boy but he tends to be very needy — always wanting to be held, nursed, played with, etc. I don’t mind it because, well honestly, he is the light of my life! On the other hand, when we are out & about he is very independent. He will sit in his stroller all day long, alternately napping & taking in the sights. At home he likes to eat at least every 1 to 2 hours, but when we’re out we can stretch feedings up to 4 hours apart. On this day, however, something was off. He was fussy even after we got out of the car. Once we finished up at the tower, the plan was to get in the car, drive to another spot and find a shady spot to feed him. As we were getting in the car he started to fuss and it just progressed and progressed to a full-on screaming tantrum. I am really in tune with him and I typically know when he is overtired, sick, going through a growth spurt, etc.; but none of those things were the case. He was inexplicably upset.

That night, as I sat nursing him in the rocking chair in his nursery, the bright light of the full moon poured in through his bedroom window lighting up his sweet, little face. Ah ha! I think that Roman gets moody at the full moon just like his father! I always thought that Matthew’s full-moon-moodiness was related to him being a Gemini — but it appears that it goes deeper than that because Roman is a Taurus like me. If you need me next full moon, I’ll be hiding somewhere far, far away. 😉

My neighbor says her little girl acts up during full moons too. Sam’s pretty good so far.

My monthly cycle was synced up with the moon cycles, it was so cool. I figure the moon really effects me because I’m a cancer and that’s my planet: )
