This week, my SWAN post is about taking educated (or calculated) risks. Basically, I think that we should all be taking more of them! It’s been about six months since I left my secure job of three years to pursue a life that I am a lot more passionate about than sitting behind a desk for 8 hours/day, 5 days/week. When I decided to make that major change in my life, it was really scary; but I can honestly say that I do not have a single regret!

I’ve made some other educated “risky” decisions in the last year, too. In September, I went to Paris alone. It was the first trip that I took overseas by myself. Some thought that maybe it wasn’t such a great idea. Maybe a young woman should not travel alone in a foreign country. Maybe she should not couch surf and stay with strangers. But looking back, that trip was one of the most incredible experiences of my life!

In the next month, I’m about to take some more educated risks, too. And I feel really good about it! I’m not doing anything foolish. I’m not putting myself in danger or quitting a job to live on the streets. I am just taking steps to live the life that I’ve always dreamed of living. I am making decisions with my heart, my soul, and my gut. I am doing things that really mean something to me and things that I am really passionate about. My decisions may not live up to everyone’s expectations about how we “should” behave and how we “should” live. A lot of people seem to think that we are supposed to go to college and get a job with good benefits and stay at that job and not take any risks. But that life is not for me! I have greater expectations for my life than simply doing things because that’s what society says I “should” do. I would rather do what I want to do in an educated and informed way.

Today, I want to ask you to do whatever it is that you have been dying to do. Whether you’ve been wanting to hire a life coach to help you deal with your anxiety or start working with a personal trainer to shed those pesky 20 pounds or move to the other side of country to do what what you’re really passionate about—today I am telling you to go for it! Do your research. Make your plans. Make sure that this is what you really want and that this is something that you can achieve. Then make it happen! Don’t wait any longer. Start making it happen right now. Life is way too short to be miserable. This is such a great SWAN post, because I am literally telling you: If you are not happy with the way your life is going, stop wasting away now! Make your dreams come true. You are totally capable. I have complete faith in you. I can’t wait to hear about it, so get going and let me know how it goes!

Thanks so much for tuning in. See you guys next time!

Dena

SWAN Saturday: Positive Influences

This week I asked my Twitter & Facebook communities what they’d like me to discuss in this post. My friend Josh responded, “I’d like to know about the characteristics that you look for in the people you surround yourself with.” This was a great suggestion because I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. I’ve written recently how I’ve been busy with more blogging, speaking, and life coaching. As I’ve gotten busier I’ve found that I’ve had to make some sacrifices in terms of how I spend my time and who I spend my time with. The busier I get, the more valuable my time becomes.

The reality is that most people are busy and it’s important that we make conscious decisions about how we spend our time. We need to focus on surrounding ourselves with people who will help us to accomplish our goals. When we’re looking for people who will help us accomplish goals, we have to look for certain characteristics.

In my experience, the people who have been there to help me along my path are positive people. I work to surround myself with people who tell me when I need to step things up or when I need to slow things down. I look for people who are willing to give me honest feedback & constructive criticism. Without that feedback, how can I improve myself as a person? I also look for people that have a really good, positive energy.

I’ve had a few negative experiences lately where I’ve been surrounded by negative, unsupportive people. With these people it seems that every time we talk or get together it’s about their problems & miseries. I’m all for being there for a friend in need, but there are some people who are consistently negative & never have anything good to say. These people are uninterested in my personal journey. That type of relationship is not for me. Sometimes it’s difficult to make hard decision and cut out negative influences, but its absolutely necessary. Negative people will suck the energy right out of us—not only with their words, but also with their actions.

It is important that we take a look at how our friends, acquaintances, and colleagues spend their time. It is a proven fact that we tend to succeed at a similar pace to the people around us. In the same token, we also tend to fail at a similar place to the people around us. It is critical to our individual success that we seriously look at our surroundings. We need to determine what it is that we really want in our own lives. Then, we can build a community around us of like-minded individuals who have similar goals to our own.

It’s not always easy. It has been historically difficult to do this. if you live in small town like I do, it can be especially difficult; but today we’re lucky. Technology enables us to make connections with people who we would have previously never been able to connect with. I recently wrote about Twitter and how it is an incredibly powerful tool for self improvement and relationship-building. The Internet gives us a unique ability to meet like-minded folks who are passionate about our journeys and who will help us achieve our goals. Take advantage of it.

In-person connections are equally as important. When you are spending in-person time with a friend or group of friends, make sure that you’re surrounding yourself with positivity, light, and love. That might mean getting on a site like Meetup.com and searching for groups in your area about topics that interest you. I recently joined the North Jersey Adventurers Group because I want to do more hiking, camping, & adventuring this year! There are groups out there for just about everything.

Volunteering is another awesome way to meet positive, like-minded people. When you meet fellow volunteers, you’ll already have something in common. Whether you’re volunteering at an animal shelter or a soup kitchen, you’re bound to make great connections with positive people. Think outside of the box.

Surrounding yourself with positivity is not always easy but it’s incredibly worthwhile. As you start to change the people that you surround yourself with, you will find that your entire existence transforms for the better.

I’d love to know what you think about the idea of surrounding yourself with positivity. Let us know what characteristics that you look for when choosing friends and acquaintances.

Thanks so much for tuning in. See you guys next time!

SWAN Saturday: Create the Life of Your Dreams

SWAN (Stop Wasting Away Now) Saturday is a weekly dose of inspiration from me to you. Each week I will make a short video post about something on my mind. The posts will be unscripted & shot straight from my soul. Stop wasting away now, life’s too short!

(If you can’t see the video, click here.)

Bonjour! This week’s short & sweet SWAN post finds me in Paris, France—just a few steps away from the Notre Dame Cathedral. This is a quick post to talk a bit more about how you can overcome your fears, stop making excuses, and start creating the life of your dreams. Right now, me being in Paris is a huge part of me doing just that. I have long dreamed of visiting Paris.

Three weeks ago, I quit my job after three years. I was ready for a change & ready to start taking some big steps toward creating the life of my dreams. (More on this later…) So, I quit my job and I booked my flight to Paris! How’s that for putting an end to excuses?

Yes, you can do what you want. You can create the life of your dreams. It’s just a matter of:

  • Overcoming the fear
  • Stopping the excuses
  • And taking action.

It’s that simple, three steps toward creating the life of your dreams. Hope this quick message gives you a jolt of inspiration today! Sending you love & light from Paris.

One of the many photographs I took of the breath-taking Notre Dame Cathedral.

Always,
D.

SWAN Saturday: Stop Making Excuses

SWAN (Stop Wasting Away Now) Saturday is a weekly dose of inspiration from me to you. Each week I will make a short video post about something on my mind. The posts will be unscripted & shot straight from my soul. Stop wasting away now, life’s too short!

(If you can’t see the video, click here.)

This week I want to talk about making excuses because for the past six months, I’ve been doing just that. For the past six months, I’ve been wanting to make a video post, but it just hasn’t happened. Why? Because I keep making excuses!

Every time I am ready to record a post or even post a recorded post, I come up with some awful excuse and refuse to move forward. I’ve delete every post thus far because they’re “not perfect”. I tell myself that the post is not relevant or too long or that I look like an idiot or any number of other excuses.

Have you ever done this to yourself? Have you ever allowed fear or insecurity to keep you from doing something that you really wanted to? I sure have. I’m ready to stop, starting right now.

Lately I’ve made several big decisions in my personal and professional life. My courage has inspired me to stop making excuses. The truth is that there is no reason to allow fear to rule your life. There is no reason to make excuses if there is something that you really want to do. I am done making excuses about why I should not share a video post! I will not allow insecurity to run my life.

So what have you been putting off? What have you been making excuses about? Do you want to seek out a new relationship? Quit your job? Lose weight? Today I am giving you permission to stop. Stop wasting away now! Stop making excuses and just do it.

If you want to go to Costa Rica and volunteer on a sustainable farm — then do it! Book the flight, make the arrangements, take the time and go. Whatever is holding you back, push it out of your way, let go, and move forward. Recognize that there is no reason to be afraid. Fear is unnecessary (read more) and most of the time it is completely irrational. Do not let irrational fear be the thing that stops you from creating the life of your dreams.

Stop worrying about being judged. Stop holding yourself back because that’s what society is telling you to do. Anything that you can dream up, you can accomplish! Define your goals. Let go of your fear. Take a giant step and push the button. In my case, it’s going to be hitting the publish button when I share this post with you!

D.
