Homemaking // Operation: Declutter 2015

If you read this blog with any regularity, or if you follow me on Instagram, then you’ve surely heard me talking about Operation: Declutter 2015. We started the project at the beginning of January. The list above shows my original game plan and a few items that I’ve added on since the beginning.

We embarked on the project for a couple of reasons. First, following his injury in October, M. is unable to return to work and is at home with us every day. Our house is small — just over 800 square feet of living space. With two adults & an active toddler crammed into this space all day every day, you quickly realize just how small it is.

We’d been here for six years in December, and while we’re not big consumers, we’ve accumulated a lot of clutter over the years. In order to to survive this winter trapped inside, this project was necessary. This is the first time that we’ve tackled the entire house together.

The second, more obvious, reason that we embarked on this project is because I am nesting/preparing for baby girl’s arrival. The layout of this house and the limited space made it difficult at times when there were two of us. When Roman joined the team, we made some changes to make it as comfortable as possible for three. Now that we are transitioning to four, there aren’t enough changes in the world that could make things comfortable. Instead we have to seriously declutter (get rid of all the excess!) and majorly reorganize.

January was a productive month. As you can see from the list, we made progress and scratched off some of the biggest tasks. My motto has been “slow & steady” and the relaxed, but productive, pace has been working.

I’ve lost some steam over the past several days. The reason being that throughout this project, my office has been a dumping ground for a lot of the “misfit” clutter. Tackling this room is next up and looking around at the piles everywhere is daunting. I hope that writing this post will remind me just how important it is to keep moving forward. Plus, baby girl is scheduled to arrive in eight weeks. If that doesn’t put a fire under my ass, nothing will. 😉

There is so much more that I want to say about our home and about decluttering in general. But I’ll leave this here for now. One thing at a time…

Seriously, there is nothing as energizing as the crazy nesting kick you get! I got mine three weeks before I had my baby, and holy cow, I was literally scrubbing every inch of the bathroom with a tooth brush haha.
