Judgment Day & the Apocalypse

If you haven’t heard the news, there is a group of folks claiming that May 21st (this Saturday) will be Judgment Day—the day that God will destroy the world because of the sins of mankind. According to their theory, this is what will happen on May 21st:

On May 21, 2011 two events will occur. These events could not be more opposite in nature, the one more wonderful than can be imagined; the other more horrific than can be imagined.
A great earthquake will occur the Bible describes it as “such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.” This earthquake will be so powerful it will throw open all graves. The remains of the all the believers who have ever lived will be instantly transformed into glorified spiritual bodies to be forever with God.

On the other hand the bodies of all unsaved people will be thrown out upon the ground to be shamed.
The inhabitants who survive this terrible earthquake will exist in a world of horror and chaos beyond description. Each day people will die until October 21, 2011 when God will completely destroy this earth and its surviving inhabitants.

Before we go any further, let me make one thing clear: This post is not an argument for or against this theory. I do not have an opinion on the matter. While I am not necessarily a religious person, I am an incredibly spiritual one. My religious beliefs can best be summed up by these words from the poet Hafiz:

I am in love with every church
And mosque
And temple
And any kind of shrine
Because I know it is there
That people say the different names
Of the One God.

Beyond this, my belief is simple, kindness is my only religion.

And now about Judgment Day…

As I mentioned above, I will not argue for or against the event. The reason is simple: I do not know what will happen. In fact, I don’t believe that any person can know what is going to happen on May 21, 2011 or on any other day for that matter. As human beings, we are not capable of understanding such things. We are not meant to.

One can spend his whole life theorizing and speculating, but the answers will not be revealed.

Instead of spending our lives in wonder or worry, it is our job to live. If you are worried about judgment day or 2012 or any other such “end of the world” philosophy, you are not living your life to its fullest potential. We fear death or the end when we are not satisfied with the now.

Here is my truth: If the world ends on May 21st, 2011, I am completely alright with that. For the past several years I have been living my life to its fullest potential.

The truth, my dearest friends, is that the end can come at anytime. People are coming and going from this plane of existence every moment. There are earthquakes & tsunamis; hurricanes & floods; plane crashes & car crashes; tree limbs falling & house fires. This is not to frighten you but to make you aware. We can not know when our time will come—but we can live every day so that we are ready for it. So that when we look back on the course of our lives, we can feel proud & complete.

I am not asking you to believe that May 21st will be the end. I am not asking you to believe that May 21st will not be the end. I am asking you to make today count—make this hour count—make this minute count.

Whether you have 2 days or 20,000 days left—live every day to its fullest potential. Live, laugh, love. Pursue your passions. Take risks. Do not be afraid. Have faith that what is meant to be will be. Let go & let God.

God long ago drew a circle in the sand exactly around the spot where you are standing right now. You were never not coming here. —Sufi poem

In love & light,
Dena

Well said. Dena, live today and every day with kindness and the Golden Rule within you and life will be good. I am somewhat amused by these pronouncements every so often about the world ending, whether or not with religious connotations, it is basically an unknown to us.

Keep on being the positive person that you are and your impact on others will be wonderful and the end of the world will remain irrelevant.

@ Lou – Thanks so much for the comment. 100% agreed. Do unto others as you would have others do onto you. The wisest of advice.
