Review: Muhammad by Deepak Chopra

DenaOctober 7, 2010

Recently, I was asked to review Deepak Chopra’s latest book, Muhammad—A Story of the Last Prophet. For a long time, I have been interested to learn more about Muhammad and the Islamic religion and so, I was very excited to oblige. This book is different than much of Deepak’s popular “self-help” work. Muhammad is a mixture of history & fiction. The story is told through the voices of different narrators—A Christian hermit mystic, a Bedouin wet nurse, and a religious rebel in Mecca.

The first—and perhaps most important—thing that I learned in reading Muhammad—A Story of the Last Prophet is that the word Island literally means peace. The author has stated his hopes that readers will come away with a better understanding of the origins of Islam and who Mohammed really was. “And a cure for us-vs.-them thinking.” This is the critical importance of the book in my opinion.

Not a day goes by when we do not hear something of the cultural/religious battle that is raging in our world. It is also my hope that this book will serve as a bridge, carrying people toward tolerance, love, and acceptance. It is only with knowledge that we can expel fear-based ignorance and fill our hearts with wisdom & light.

Note to readers: Because I was given a free, advanced copy of this book to review, I am giving it away to one of my lovely readers! Simply leave a comment telling with your name & email. I will select one commenter at random to receive my copy.
