A few weeks ago, we began introducing Roman to solid food. How exciting for a pudgy baby like him! The first thing that I gave him was a bit of mashed up avocado. Altogether it amounted to the size of a pea. I put the tidbit on my finger and put it into his mouth. I wasn’t sure how he would react, but he started suckling away as if nursing. I pulled my finger away, waited a few moments, and then opened his mouth to inspect. I half expected him to spit it all out, but to my delight it was gone. He took it right down. A true lover of avocado — just like his mama. (I wonder if he’ll share my addiction to guacamole as well…) About a week later, we were at a barbecue and we gave him a wee taste of Matthew’s ice cream. Then, this morning, we decided to get all formal-like and actually feed him from his baby bowl and spoon. I mashed up a small piece of banana and we took turns feeding him little bits.

Obviously we’re not introducing food “by the book.” I’ve read all sorts of advice on the topic, including that you should wait until six months to introduce food and that “food before one is just for fun.” However, of all the advice that I’ve read, I feel that Baby-led Weaning (BLW) is most aligned with our parenting philosophy. BLW is essentially allowing the baby to lead the way in terms of his introduction to solids. Recently, Roman has been “eyeing up” everything that we’ve been eating. He even licks his lips. I’m sure that he’s not ready to start feeding himself necessarily but he seems to be enjoying the tidbits that we’re giving him and as soon as he’s ready we’ll put some little finger foods in front of him and let him explore.

In the meantime, I am still exclusively breastfeeding him all day every day. At a whopping 18.5 pounds at four months, I think we’ve got a good eater on our hands. May it always be this way!
