Sometimes I come across an artisan and I just immediately connect with their work. That is how it happened when I came across Sara Johnson’s work and her shop, Sarava Designs.

Sara went to college for Textiles & Apparel. Designing and sewing has always been her passion. Ultimately she went on to pursue a career in Marketing instead of fashion design, but while on maternity leave she dusted off the sewing machine and started making little baby items for her sweet daughter, Ava. With the stress (and joy!) of taking care of a newborn & trying to be the perfect mother/wife, Sara found great peace in the quiet of her basement surrounded by her sewing machine, beautiful fabrics, and a glass of wine.

Eventually Sara started getting requests from friends, and then friends of friends, for custom baby blankets, bibs, and burp clothes. She loved working with people to create the perfect baby gift, and the extra income allowed her to stay home the whole twelve weeks with her baby. After she returned to work full time, Sara decided to launch Sarava Designs in hopes of saving up enough money to stay home again for her next maternity leave. Little Ava is her ultimate motivation to keep sewing away.

I reached out to Sara recently about working together because I was in desperate need of something to keep Roman’s attention while he nurses. Lately he’s been grabby, grabby, grabby. He pulls my hair, my earrings, slaps whatever he can reach, and doesn’t hesitate to pinch my boob, really hard! I had heard that at this age baby’s start to have a hard time “focusing” and that teething/nursing necklaces are a good way to avoid getting pinched. When Sara sent along this gorgeous necklace I was floored. Not only has it been keeping Roman’s attention (he loves to pull on it and roll the balls in his palms) but it is also stunning and I love to wear it out! The necklace is made with 100% cotton fabric and natural unfinished beads. Honestly, it’s something that I would buy for myself even if it weren’t functional, too. It’s that pretty. (Here I am wearing it with a neutral outfit. It adds such a lovely pop of colour.) The best part is that I know we are going to continue to get use out of it, especially when Roman starts teething soon!

I love it! Sam is at the grabbing stage, making me contemplate cutting off my hair. He also love to stick fabric in his mouth. I’m on my way to ordering one of these: ) Thanks for the share!

I ordered two of the Teething Necklaces as gifts for young friends with newborns! An original, creative gift that I am certain they do not have! I love them. They are cute, arrived in a timely manner and were well designed! I love them!
