When it comes to summertime, basic activities like swimming, tanning, and playing sports can be a full-blown assault on your hair. Chlorinated pools, lots of extra time in the sun, and long, humid days all lead to one thing — bad hair days.

As a busy Mama, I don’t have much time to spend on my hair, so I do my best to keep my hair safe from summertime damage throughout the season, so that I can avoid having to repair damage down the road. Here are my 6 easy tips for keeping hair healthy and beautiful even on the hottest days of summer.

1. Saturate your hair before you go for a swim. Your hair is like a sponge. A dry sponge absorbs a lot, while a wet sponge doesn’t absorb much at all. When your hair is soaked with clean water or leave-in conditioner, it will absorb less saltwater or chlorine. Rinsing your hair after swimming is a good way to remove any remaining salt or chlorine as soon as possible.

2. Skip hot tools as much as possible. Give your hair a break from curling irons, flat irons, and blow dryers. Go for natural looks like beachy waves and loose braids that are pretty and allow for heat-free styling.

3. Use styling products that contain UV filters. These products will protect your hair from sun damage and keep color-dyed hair looking richer longer. These products will protect your hair and your scalp which is vulnerable to skin cancer. UV hair products are available in a range of options like sprays, cream formulas, and gels.

4. Wear a hat or a swim cap. Wide-brimmed sunhats are not only stylish, but they are also an effective way to keep the sun from damaging your hair and your face. If you swim a lot, tucking your hair into a swim cap is a good way to keep your tresses safe from the damaging effects of salt and chlorine.
