Book Giveaway: A Dual Language Book in Italian and English (The Adventures of Bosley Bear)
I was thrilled when Tim Johnson — author of the Bosley Bear Language Learning series — contacted me about doing a book giveaway. When Matthew & I first started talking about starting a family, we agreed that language would be an important part of what we taught our child(ren). Matthew is first-generation American-born. His mother’s family migrated from Russia and his father’s from Italy. He has always lamented the fact that he didn’t learn either of his parents’ native tongues as a child. Although my parents are both native English speakers, I studied Spanish all throughout grade school, secondary, and university. During college, I spent three years as a (Spanish) foreign language teacher.
It is important to expose children to foreign language as early as possible. It’s also important to make it fun! If a child is just shown flash cards, the impression won’t be memorable. Games, songs, and colorful books are all excellent ways to teach a foreign language because they rhyme, are easy to remember, and fun to listen to. When words are recited over and over, it reinforces what was learned and brings movement and rhythm into the equation of stimulating the brain for better learning.
Even at five months, Roman already enjoys being read to. Our first Bosley book, Bosley’s First Words (Le prime parole di Bosley): A Dual Language Book in Italian and English (The Adventures of Bosley Bear) captures his attention every time I open it. It’s filled with fun, high-contrast illustrations. It’s a nice way to introduce him to essential Italian words and phrases while getting to know the adorable Bosley Bear. As Roman grows, we’ll use these words and phrases around the house to teach him the names of toys, foods, numbers and simple actions.
