Homemaking: Refinishing My Bedroom Set
“When I work fourteen hours a day, seven days a week, I get lucky.” –Armand Hammer
I had grand ambitions for my house and yard this spring. More than anything, I was excited about starting seeds for my garden. But then life happened, as life does, and a lot of what I had planned had to change. I never started my seeds, but I’m still going to have a garden. Some of the other larger projects that I had planned, have taken a back seat to more pressing matters and even one or two other fun projects for the kids that I decided to prioritize first.
Over the last few years, I’ve gotten so much better at rolling with the punches. I’ve always been anxious, that’s a part of me that will never go away. However, I have learned that my anxiety doesn’t have to rule me. It’s up to me to be the person that I want to be and live the life that I want to live. If I remain conscious and thoughtful, I can choose peace and faith over fear and anxiety. I also have gotten a lot better at practicing acceptance and grace. Things don’t always turn out exactly as I wanted them to, but that’s okay. I’m learning to embrace the unexpected and to find beauty within any outcome.
One of the projects that I did manage to get finished in time for spring was refinishing the secondhand bedroom set that was given to me last year. My brother-in-law was helping a friend who was getting rid of everything in preparation for a move to Florida. He knew that I needed furniture and sent me a bunch of photos including some snaps of an old, dark, oak bedroom set. Just by looking at the blurry cell phone pictures, I knew that the set held an incredible amount of promise. If you’ve ever moved an old-fashioned piece of solid oak furniture, then you know what an ordeal it is.
From getting the furniture to my garage, to refinishing it, to getting it to my bedroom — it was an epic task from start to finish. I am so grateful to my friends & family who helped out along the way. It’s finally done and in my room. Well, the armoire is done, I still have to finish putting the pulls on the matching dresser, so I’ll get some snaps of that soon. For now, here is the finished armoire. Scroll to the bottom of the post to see the piece before I refinished it.
Happy Monday, friends. I hope that your week ahead is full of peace, joy, and beauty. xo
