beauty-experimentAs a new mom, struggling with the facts that I am still holding onto baby weight; that there are ever-present bags under my eyes; that I find several new grey hairs every day… I needed this book. The Beauty Experiment is a story that every woman should read — mama or not.

In 2007, the author, Phoebe Baker Hyde, found herself in a perfect storm of self-doubt. She was a newbie parent with an unfamiliar mom-body, an expat in alien surroundings, and a confused professional trailing in the wake of her husband’s successful career. She sought refuge in the mail, relying on beauty pick-me-ups and new clothes for comfort. (Sounds familiar…) Then one day, as many of us do, she realized that her problems were more than skin-deep. So she started a radical beauty cleanse — no makeup, no hair products, no shaving/waxing/no jewelry, etc. — in an effort to face womanhood’s challenges plainly. It was a year-long experiment that tested her in unexpected ways, forced her to re-evaluate what she wanted from life, and changed her perception of self/beauty.

The book is a painfully honest, funny, and touching story about Phoebe’s determination to outgrow the fantasy of feminine perfection, make peace with her critical inner voice, and to love herself exactly as she is.

I’m giving away my review copy of The Beauty Experiment because I want to pay it forward. If you’d like a chance to win, just enter using the Rafflecopter giveaway below.

  1. I don’t know about anyone else, but my inner voice is loud and usually rude. I’m working on teaching her some kindness. 🙂

Thanks for being on the tour, Dena!

  2. My first reaction:there is no way I could go without shaving, second reaction:maybe that not what it is all about after all, maybe its about quieting the inner turmoil.
