Baby’s Been…

Roman James is 3.5 months old. I want to remember what he’s doing at each stage of his growth. This series “Baby’s Been” is all about what my baby has been up to lately.

  • Last time we checked, Roman weighed 16.5 pounds. Everyone comments on his adorable chub. He has the sweetest chipmunk cheeks and a genuine Buddha belly!
  • After his three month shots, he got a fever. It went up to 101.9 and broke his mama’s heart. He had his first dose of medicine (Baby Motrin) to bring the fever down.
  • Sleep has been getting better! Before the fever, he even slept swaddled in his crib for a couple of nights! Unfortunately, soon after the fever, he developed a cold. So he has been back in the swing to keep him elevated. We’re going to give the crib another shot soon. Generally speaking though, his sleep stretches are much improved and he sleeps on average 4 to 6 hour stretches at night. Nap lengths vary but he naps pretty consistently every two hours.
  • Feeding times have improved, too! Instead of every 90 minutes around the clock (!) Roman now eats every 2 hours when we’re home and every 3 hours when we’re out & about.
  • Exciting new changes are happening every day. His “vocabulary” is through the roof. Every day, Papa and I notice a new sound or a new “word” in baby language. 😉
  • He’s getting stronger and his hand-eye coordination is finally taking shape. The other day he rolled over onto his side for the first time. He’s done it a few times since. He’s always trying to sit up — no luck yet but he’s sure working those abs! He’s also started to reach out for things and hold onto them.
  • I think he’s finally kicked his addiction to the breast! Don’t get me wrong he still loves to eat (I mean look at the size of him!) but it’s not his most favourite thing anymore. Now he eats until he is full or falls asleep and that’s that. He has replaced his love for nursing with his love of adventure. He loves to get out and go places. People always remark on how well-behaved he is. He just takes in all of the new sights, sounds, and smells wherever we go. I hope his sweet curiosity lasts forever.
  • And finally, little man has developed a couple of bad habits, too. He loves to chew on his fingers — which is fine with us — but he’s just recently started to gag occasionally! It’s terrible. He makes himself choke and even made himself vomit once. We’ve actually been pulling his hands away from his mouth when he does that and firmly saying, “no.” Our first bit of discipline you could say. His other bad habit has to do with falling asleep. It’s getting more and more difficult for me to put him down at bedtime. It used to be that nursing was enough. Then he needed to by nursed and rocked. Now he needs to be nursed and swung around. I find myself simultaneously nursing him and twisting at the core for ten minutes or more. By the time I finally get him down I’m in a full-blown sweat! Heaven help me… I’ve picked up The No-Cry Sleep Solution in (another) desperate attempt to sort it all out.

And here are a bunch of photographs of him in his little bunny suit. Just because…

I LOVE that outfit. He is sooo cute!

Let me know what you think of the No Cry Sleep book! I had it on request at the library, but I’m going to check out The Happiest Baby Guide to Great Sleep I loved Happiest Baby on the Block, so I want to see what he says about sleeping. But yeah, I swaddle Sam and use the white noise machine at night in our room and that seems to be working right now. Good luck!

You know, I DON’T think it gets any cuter than that. He’s so dreamy 🙂 And good luck with the sleep thing. Every baby is different so I don’t have real advice for how to help. My daughter was a nightmare at putting down for naps AND bedtime. She couldn’t self sooth or put herself to sleep so it took over a year before we all figured it out. It’s crazy how much our lives have changed since we’ve been able to just lay her in her crib (16 months old now) while she’s awake, say goodnight, and walk out without a single sound, cry or complaint from her. I know how ya feel. I’d say create a schedule. After Mia eats lunch at 12 (everyday) I clean her off and put her down for her nap (only one long one, now). She knows it’s coming. We also had to train her way too late in the game to put herself to sleep by letting her cry it out. We didn’t do this “cold turkey” though like everyone recommended to us. We couldn’t, it was too sad for us. We’d go back in after 5 min. of crying and lay her back down, tell her to go to bed and leave again. This would repeat a few times before she just got so tired she’d fall asleep. After a few days to a week, she was getting the picture and got with the program. The earlier you can start a routine, the better. I would rock/swing her to sleep everyday and looking back, it wasn’t helping her self sooth and put herself to sleep. You’ll know when it’s time for that I think.

always happy to know that i’m not the only one who thinks he’s cute. sometimes i wonder if i have complete “mama-bias” or if he really is that cute. 😉 thank you so much for sharing your baby sleep experience. ughhh… it’s so hard. do you mind me asking when you start the light CIO? i’ve heard so many different things from so many people. we are at a point now where rocking him and nursing him isn’t cutting it. he can’t soothe himself and he’s suffering through nap times and bedtimes because he is so dependent on me and even when he has me, sometimes it’s not enough. i know that he needs to put himself to sleep but i just don’t know how long to wait. i’ve heard everything from anytime after 3 months to wait until at least a year. hearing other people’s experiences always helps. thank you. <3

i’ve heard good things about that book! i was tempted to buy it so many times; although i think when you are adding a health issue into things it makes the sleep schedules a bit harder – can’t wait to hear how it is for you though xx
