Day 25: Your Biggest Regret

I believe that everything happens for a reason. I would never turn back the hands of time because one change could lead to many changes and well, you know how that goes. (See also: The Butterfly Effect.) However, if I had the knowledge then that I have now, there are some things that I would have done differently in my life. There are three that stick out the most.

1. I would have gone to Community College after high school rather than going straight to University. During my first two years at University, I took General Elective (GE) courses. I could have taken the same courses at a Community College for half of the price per each credit. I would have saved a lot of money that way and came out with the same exact degree in the end.

2. I would have traveled more. Although I have done a fair amount of traveling in my life, there are so many more places that I have always dreamed of visiting. And while I am certain that I will see much more of the U.S., I am not sure how much international travel I’ll be doing in the future. If I knew then what I know now, I probably would have taken a few more “big trips” in my younger years. Mainly, I wish I had spent a summer backpacking across Europe and I wish I had seen the Great Pyramids in Egypt.

3. Matthew and I often say that we wish we’d had a child sooner. The idea of being young(er) parents is appealing for a whole host of reasons — Hello! exhaustion. And now that we are parents, we realize that it is so much more wonderful & fulfilling than we’d ever imagined it would be. It’s very easy for us to casually say, “Oh, we should have done this years ago!” However, at the end of the day, I’m not so sure I would change it. One of the biggest things that kept us from getting married/having a baby sooner was our home renovation which took a solid four years to complete. Having an infant and living in a construction zone would have made me nuts — or nuttier than I already was. (Remember that time when I had to do my dishes in the bathtub for a month!?)

On the whole, my life is incredibly blessed. I wouldn’t change much and I’m really grateful that I can say that with complete honesty in my heart.

I think my biggest regret might be not becoming a varsity high school sports coach, which also means I should have become a teacher. I really think I could have impacted the life of a teenager by being their varsity coach, but since practices and games are always after school (3:00 in the afternoon), the only way to be a varsity high school coach would have been to become a teacher. Not exactly certain what subject I could have teached (math, history, gym), but I think I would have been OK.

I’m thinking I want to travel exclusively to the US for the next several years. It’s cheap and easy and there is SO much to see and it’s SO beautiful! This last trip was short for sights but I was definitely fulfilled. From snowy mountain tops to 20 degree beaches in one day! I can’t wait to go back 🙂
