Like Father, Like Son

Pregnancy is as much a waiting game as it is anything else. And I am not good at waiting. The first twenty weeks, while we waited to find out our baby’s gender, were excruciating for me. A few folks asked if we would “find out.” When I said yes, they would say, “Oh no! Don’t spoil the surprise.” I looked at them like they were absolutely bat-shit-crazy. Draw out the agony even longer than necessary — WHY WOULD I DO THAT!?

Once we found out that we were having a boy a new sort of anticipation grew. What would he look like? Whose eyes would he have? Whose nose, whose lips, whose skin, whose hair? All of these little questions plagued me day & night. I wanted to know him so desperately. Every night when we went to bed, Matthew would place his hand on my belly, waiting for little kicks & punches and we would talk & wonder about who our little boy would be.

I very clearly remember seeing him for the first time. Yes, I was in pain and completely exhausted from the trial of a natural birth, but that moment was crystal clear. I remember it perfectly. Everything went quiet, everything fell away. And there was his sweet little face. I took it in for only a millisecond when suddenly a wave of sheer shock and confusion took over me. HOW COULD THIS BE!?!? I had given birth to………

My baby’s resemblance to his father was is striking. It actually took my breath away. Eventually the shock passed. The more that I got to know my little guy, the more that he looked like himself. Yes, he resembled his father, but he mostly looked like my little Roman James. That is until a few weeks ago when we were at my mother-in-law’s house looking at old pictures. She pulled out a couple of M. when he was Roman’s age. The shock came rushing back all over again. I am beginning to wonder if we produced a baby or a clone. 😉

I hope that you had a lovely weekend. It was Labor Day Weekend here in the States — the unofficial end to summer. It’s been making me a bit emotional. This summer was so wonderful. I am very sorry to see it go. I am, however, reminding myself of all of the magic that is in store come autumn & winter.

Please give us a vote if you’ve got a moment today. Many thanks! xo

Oh my gosh, twins! And it’s still weird to see the name “Roman” about someone else, he is the first Roman I’ve heard of besides my own! 🙂

your boy definitely has daddy’s nose and mouth. how funny, i just posted a comparison photo post up on my blog the other day, too! except it’s between my daughter and my mom! i’m still hunting for one of me at about the same age for a trio comparison. all 3 of us look the same. oh, and i felt exactly the same way you did while waiting to find out the sex of my baby. i was going crazy with anticipation. for our next one, i can’t wait to NOT know the sex. yup, that’s right…i’ve decided that when the next little baby comes along, I’ll be waiting until birth. i couldn’t be more excited about that, too.

Hahahaha! They are clones. And you’re the first one to state something I’ve always felt is so weird but so great: giving birth to your husband! Or to yourself…– I love that I can see his little cousins in him, too. Roman James IS a perfect name 🙂

Ha ha, that’s hilarious in the most awesome way! Those smiles are exactly the same! At least you’ll know that Roman will grow up to be very handsome: )

Sam threw us for a loop with all that super dark hair. I was so shocked! I had light blonde hair and Rob red hair when we were babies.
