Our Wood-burning Stove

This month, we completed the installation of our new wood-burning stove. This is one of our first, and most important, steps toward sustainable living. Wood-burning stoves are one of the most energy efficient and environmentally-friendly ways to heat the home. Wood burners outperform both solar panels and ground source heat pumps. The type of stove that we chose — a double combustion wood burner — enables 90% of smoke and particles to be converted to heat, keeping emissions to a minimum. Additionally, the wood that we use in our stove is all sustainably harvested (by my husband) from fallen/dead trees.

We’ve been using the stove for about a week now and are already appreciating the benefits. Our dog Bella is the stove’s #1 fan. You will find her in front of it all day & night. This is a joy for Roman because he just adores her. Matthew loves the stove, too. Chopping firewood has always been a favourite activity for him. And I love it because it is beautiful to look at, friendly to the environment, and drastically decreases the money we spend on our winter gas bill.

I am really pleased with this addition to our home and grateful for the work that Matthew did to secure the best stove at the best price. There is nothing like cozying up to the fire with my family on a cold winter day.

Wow, loving those pictures of the fire place, the doggie and your son and husband. I love a home that has a fireplace. It has been a long time since we lived somewhere that had one though. Thanks for sharing this story.

Jealous! All I ever want is to have a fireplace or wood burning stove, I hate that we don’t have either. 🙁

Love it! We wish we had a wood stove but we have a gas fireplace, next house, maybe! When it gets to the time that you want to erect a safety gate, we bought a Kidco metal gate and it works really well.

Congrats! My dream is to have a wood burning stove. I do have to be grateful for at least having a gas fireplace. While by no means sustainable or cost efficient, it’s a nice treat. Our dogs love it and sometimes I turn it on just for them: )

Aahhhh this is my husband’s dream!!! Well, at least one of them. He would just die to have a wood burning stove. We don’t own our home, therefore, not an option for us. We do have a fireplace, but the damn thing has an opening on both sides of it (hard to describe) so that means the smoke does NOT travel up like it should (or so we’ve been told by the landlord) so we don’t have fires at all. Such….a bummer. I’m so happy for your family’s new addition. May beautiful, new memories be formed around that bad boy. And, love your photos 🙂

Your home, the fireplace, your family…everything is so perfect. You are truly blessed. Feeling a lot jealous of you right now, I always wanted a fireplace.
