Bravery

As Borges said in his writings, “There is no other virtue than being brave.” And one has to understand that braveness is not the absence of fear, but rather the strength to keep on going forward despite the fear. —Paulo Coelho

I’ve been starting this post (in my head) all day. It was going to be a post about my life before I found out that I was pregnant. I was going to write something about then & now, what’s changed. But for all of my thinking, nothing came. It’s hard to remember life before — and sometimes — I’m not even sure that I would want to. Today was long and hard just like all of the days when we end up staying in the house all day. I remember in my first trimester, thinking: nothing could ever be as hard as this. Then I remember during labor, thinking: nothing could ever be as hard as this. Then I remember those first couple of months after Roman was born, thinking: nothing could ever be as hard as this. Life is scary. Motherhood is scary. Sometimes it feels like it’s too hard, too scary, and you wonder how you’ll go on. But it’s like the quote says — you just keep on going forward despite the fear. That is true bravery. You don’t give up and then you get to realize over and over again how beautiful and worth it every struggle ever was.
